Whale Watching

Whales have always been a part of Provincetown—you can catch glimpses from the beaches—so it’s not surprising that whale watching began here. Whale watching was born in 1975 when a fisherman by the name of Al Avellar teamed up with Charles Mayo, a marine biologist from the Provincetown Center of Coastal Studies. A few people turned into thousands and whale watching in Provincetown has since become one of the town’s main staples.

Whale Watching Tips

Whale watching in Provincetown usually takes between two and three hours. Due to the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean, it’s a good idea to dress warm and even bring a dry set of clothes. Why? If you want to get the best views, you can count on getting splashed; after all, a whale has to come up for air, right? If anyone is prone to seasickness and still wants to enjoy themselves, make sure to bring whatever medication that’s needed. Finally, have a great time, take photos, and make memories in this family-friendly activity.

Provincetown beaches stretch for miles with many a part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Within the National Seashore, you’ll find Herring Cove Beach and Race Point Beach which have both been recognized by Travel + Leisure and TripAdvisor as some of the best beaches on the Cape.
